We are committed to
The why of sustainability
Sustainability is more than the environment, it is about people, planet and business ethics. Greenhouse gas emissions result in global warming, with disastrous effects on climate, environment, biodiversity and all human beings going forward. Global awareness is increasing, and solutions are complex. Legislation is evolving rapidly which requiring compliance parallelly customers expect companies to operate responsibly.
Legislation
Sustainability is no longer a nice to have but a legal requirement.
There is a paradigm shift in sustainability, with new and stricter EU and global reporting regulations that will affect us from 2027. The cost of non-compliance will be expensive (fines, brand reputation, customers trust, business disruptions etc.)
Owners
Sustainable value creation increases the long-term valuation of a company.
Our owners are requiring us to have good governance and to go beyond just regulatory compliance e.g., by committing to voluntary sustainability frameworks and leading the way.
Competitors
Sustainability creates competitive advantage due to stakeholders’ increased sustainability demands.
Our main competitors are focusing on climate change mitigation (achieving CO2e reduction targets) and responsible supply chains.
Investors
Sustainability increases investor confidence and mitigates risks associated with poor sustainability performance.
Banks are offering sustainability linked loans with lower interest rates, to facilitate and support environmentally and socially sustainable economic activity and growth.
Customers
Customers’ expectations for sustainable products and services are increasing. Sustainability is a must-have rather than a differentiator.
Our main customers require less CO2e intensive products and services. They also require transparency throughout the value chain related to our social and environmental impact.
Employees
Sustainability influences employer branding, talent recruitment and employee retainment.
Candidates and employees are attracted to companies that focus on sustainability as part of their business strategy because it gives meaning to the work they do.
Our sustainability activities
From Principles to Practice
Sustainability has become a strategic imperative across industries. Our whitepaper Embedding Sustainability into Business explores how environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles are reshaping long-term resilience and competitiveness. It outlines the need for action across people, supply chains, energy, and governance, showing how businesses can cut emissions, improve transparency, and meet stakeholder expectations.
Drawing on Gunnebo Safe Storage’s own decarbonisation journey, the paper highlights practical steps such as renewable energy adoption, low-carbon materials, circular design, and workforce upskilling, giving decision-makers a clear view of the challenges and opportunities of embedding sustainability into business.
Business ethics: CSRD reporting compliance
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is the EU legislation requiring all large companies to publish yearly reports on their environmental and social impact activities. It helps investors, consumers, policymakers, and other stakeholders evaluate large companies’ non-financial performance.
CSRD will apply to Gunnebo from 1/1/2027 – report to be published first half 2028. However, Gunnebo has decided to issue a first CSRD report in 2025 (for year 2024), ahead of its obligation.
CSRD will be a part of the company’s yearly report, together with the financial reporting.
Climate impact engagement: Committing to SBTi
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Gunnebo’s goal is five years ahead of this schedule (ie 2045) in line with the Swedish Climate Goal.
Our aim is to reduce both direct and indirect emissions in line with global climate targets and regional regulations.
Listening to our people, strengthening our culture
We conduct a comprehensive employee engagement survey that provides valuable insights into our workplace culture, highlighting areas of strength while also identifying opportunities for improvement.
The survey is regularly shared with all employees, and the results are used to enhance the working environment across all regions and departments. These insights form the basis for new initiatives and steps, and enable us to take a proactive approach to fostering a positive and inclusive workplace.
